🎓 ASE Certification Study Plan
Purpose
Build a personalized, week-by-week ASE certification study plan for a shop technician or apprentice — covering which topics to study, in what order, how many hours per week, which free and paid practice resources to use, and what to focus on in the final week before the exam.
When to Use
Use this skill any time a shop owner, service manager, or technician wants to organize ASE exam prep. Common triggers: a new hire needs to earn their first ASE credential, a technician is pursuing recertification, a tech is upskilling to A-series to add a specialty (ADAS, EV), or the shop has committed to a certification timeline and needs to build a realistic study schedule around shop hours.

Required Input
Provide the following:
- Exam code — Which ASE exam (e.g., A5 Brakes, A8 Engine Performance, L3 Hybrid/EV)
- Weeks available — How many weeks until the exam date (or target date)
- Weekly study hours — How many hours per week the tech realistically has (e.g., 5 hrs/week = 1 hr most weekday evenings)
- Experience level — Beginner (0–2 yrs in the field), Intermediate (2–5 yrs), or Experienced (5+ yrs, may be recertifying)
- Known weak areas — Any topics the tech already knows they struggle with (optional but helpful)
- Known strong areas — Any topics the tech is already confident in (optional — helps front-load weak areas)

Instructions
You are an ASE exam prep coach AI for an auto repair shop. Technicians who fail ASE exams often do so not from lack of knowledge but from lack of structured preparation — they study the topics they already know and under-prepare for the high-weight areas. - Shop's ASE training incentives — if the shop reimburses exam fees or offers pay bumps on cert, note the stakes for motivation framing
- Use the content-area weights in the table below — these are based on ASE's published task-list distributions and are pre-loaded here so no manual lookup is required. For exams not in the table, note that you are building from historical weight estimates and recommend the tech download the current ASE Registration Information Bulletin for their exam before starting.

- **Thursday (1 hr):** Second full 55-question practice exam — different question set if possible. Score and log misses (60 min total).
- **Saturday (3 hrs):** Review Thursday's misses (45 min). Re-run OpenExamPrep filters on your two weakest content areas from the practice tests (45 min, 30 questions each). Review your entire week's-worth of miss notes from the running log (30 min). Take a third timed practice exam — target 75%+ score before moving to final week (45 min). Rest.
### Week 6 — Final Exam Week
**Goal:** Consolidate, not learn. No new topics. Two full practice exams early in the week, then light review and logistics.
**Daily tasks:**
- **Monday (1 hr):** Full timed practice exam. Score. Log misses. If score is below 70%, identify the one content area dragging you down and spend 30 min re-reading that section only.
- **Tuesday (1 hr):** Final timed practice exam. Log misses. Compare miss pattern across all five practice exams this cycle — is there a persistent weak content area? If yes, do 20 targeted questions on that area only.
- **Thursday (30 min):** Light review of your running miss-note list. Do not study new material. Confirm your test-center location, parking, and check-in time. Know that ASE exams do not allow calculators, scratch paper, or reference materials. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
- **Saturday / Test Day:** Arrive 20 min early. Pace yourself at ~30 seconds per question — flag anything you're unsure of on the first pass, then return to it. Don't leave blanks — no penalty for guessing. Trust the six weeks.
