Recall repairs are OEM-funded and must be completed at an authorized franchised dealer — this skill never positions the independent shop as the recall repairer. Every outreach routes the customer to the authorized dealer for the recall work itself and holds the shop's value on adjacent paid work (the alignment, the brake service, the diag, the PM, the state inspection) that the customer still needs. Output must never invent a campaign number, must never claim a recall is something it isn't, must never describe the recall repair as chargeable to the customer, and must never tell the customer the shop will perform the recall work. Required Input

Provide the following. The skill will flag anything missing rather than fabricate it — fabricated recall details carry NHTSA misrepresentation exposure as well as customer-trust damage.

  1. Recall details — NHTSA campaign number (e.g., 26V-XXX), OEM campaign code if different, recall title (short name the OEM uses), affected make/model/year range, summary of the defect (1–3 sentences, lifted carefully from the NHTSA or OEM bulletin — do not paraphrase the technical fix, just the consumer-facing risk), whether it's a safety recall, service campaign, or compliance recall (these have different urgency tones), whether NHTSA has classified it as "do-not-drive" or "park-outside," and any interim measures the OEM has published.
  2. Remedy status — Is the fix currently available at dealers, or is the owner being notified before parts are ready? If parts not yet available, the outreach tone shifts to "we'll let you know when the fix is ready" not "schedule now."
  3. Target audience — A single VIN'd customer, a batch of customers, or a whole-database sweep. For a single customer, provide name, preferred channel (SMS / email / phone), vehicle (YMM, last 6 of VIN, plate if used in shop records), last service date, and any relationship context (long-time customer, new customer, recently had a related repair). For a batch, the skill will produce a mail-merge-ready template with field placeholders.
  4. Shop-to-dealer routing — Whether the shop has a preferred authorized dealer partner to refer to (by name and phone), or whether the outreach points customers to the NHTSA recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and the OEM's own recall scheduler.
  5.   • Tell the truth about what a recall is. A safety recall is an OEM's admission that a defect exists and they will fix it at no charge. The customer does not owe the dealer for the recall repair. Never imply otherwise, never soften the defect description beyond what the OEM itself published, and never let the shop look like it's trying to up-sell around the recall.
  • Do not practice recall repair outside the dealer network. The shop is not the repairer for this work (unless the user's input states it is an OEM-contracted fulfillment partner). The outreach routes the customer to the authorized dealer. If the customer asks, "can't you just do it," the scripted advisor-reply is: "Only the authorized dealer can complete the recall because the OEM is paying for it and the parts are VIN-tracked — but we're happy to take care of [the non-recall items] whenever you're ready."
  • Match tone to severity. "Do-not-drive" and "park-outside" recalls get stern, plain-language urgency with a daily cadence and a phone attempt on Day 0. Routine safety recalls get a respectful heads-up tone with the default cadence. Service campaigns get a low-urgency informational tone. Never treat a routine campaign like a fire drill, and never treat a do-not-drive recall like a coupon mailer.
  • Cite the campaign, do not rewrite the fix. Reference the NHTSA campaign number and a link to nhtsa.gov/recalls so the customer can verify independently. Summarize only the consumer-facing risk from the published bulletin. Do not describe the technical remedy — that's the dealer's job, and misdescribing a fix is how shops get sued.
  • Handle parts-not-yet-available gracefully. When the remedy is not yet available, set expectations: "The manufacturer has announced this recall but the parts and fix are not ready yet. We'll let you know as soon as they are. In the meantime, here's the interim guidance from the OEM." Do not pressure scheduling.
  • TCPA / CAN-SPAM every channel. SMS outreach includes STOP-to-opt-out language on the first message of a sequence when the customer is not previously opted-in. Email includes the shop's physical address and an unsubscribe reference. Voicemails identify the shop by name within the first 8 seconds.
  • Never invent a campaign number, remedy, affected-model list, or defect. If the input is incomplete, flag the gap and ask for clarification — do not guess.
  • Adjacent-work mention is tactful and optional. If the customer has deferred work, the outreach can mention it briefly in a separate section ("While you're thinking about the recall — a reminder that your brakes showed yellow on your last inspection and we have you noted for a quote whenever you're ready"). Artifact rules:

Day 0 SMS (routine safety recall):

  • First line: shop name + customer first name + vehicle year-make-model
  • Second line: the OEM has issued a safety recall (campaign number) for this vehicle
  • Third line: one-sentence risk description (from OEM bulletin, paraphrased minimally)
  • Fourth line: how to verify (nhtsa.gov/recalls VIN lookup) and who fixes it (authorized [OEM] dealer, at no charge)
  • Fifth line: opt-out language ("Reply STOP to opt out") if not already opted in
  • Length ceiling: 320 characters (two SMS segments). Do not include a coupon, a rebuilt-parts pitch, or a review ask in a recall SMS.
