Google unveiled Universal Cart at I/O 2026 on Tuesday, announcing a cross-merchant shopping experience that follows users from Search to Gemini to YouTube to Gmail. The product, powered by Gemini, lets you add items from different retailers into one unified cart that tracks price drops, monitors stock, and even checks for compatibility between products.

This is Google's most aggressive shopping bet in a decade, and the clearest signal yet that the company sees agentic commerce — AI that buys things on your behalf — as a major battlefield with Amazon, OpenAI, and Perplexity.

How Universal Cart actually works

The cart sits as a persistent object across your Google account. Browse for hiking boots in Search, add them. Ask Gemini to help find a matching jacket, add that too. Watch a YouTube review for a tent, click the shop link, add it. The items pile up in the same cart regardless of which retailer they came from.

Once items are in the cart, Gemini takes over in the background. It watches for price drops, checks competing retailers for the same SKU at a lower price, and pings you when something that was out of stock comes back. You can also transfer items from one merchant to another inside the cart if Gemini finds a better deal — a feature TechCrunch called "the dealbreaker for Amazon-loyal shoppers."

The custom-PC demo that stole the keynote

The keynote moment that got the most attention wasn't a price-tracking feature. It was a custom PC build. Google demoed a user dropping a CPU, motherboard, RAM, and case into the cart from four different retailers. Gemini flagged that the chosen RAM speed wasn't supported by the motherboard and suggested two compatible alternatives.

That kind of compatibility checking — Gemini reading product specs and reasoning about how parts fit together — is what Google means when it says the cart "gets smarter as the models improve." Today it's PC parts. The roadmap, hinted at in the blog post, includes furniture sets that need to fit together, recipes that need ingredients in matching quantities, and outfit pairings that need to match across sizes.

Why this matters for retailers

Universal Cart launches with a curated set of integrated retailers including Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair, Nike, and Target. Shopify's inclusion is particularly significant because it gives Google access to the catalog of more than four million independent merchants who run on the Shopify platform.

The deal structure has not been publicly disclosed. Industry analysts following the Search Engine Journal coverage suggested Google is treating Universal Cart as a referral channel rather than a marketplace, meaning retailers keep the customer relationship and pay Google for the click rather than a percentage of the sale. That's a notable departure from Amazon's marketplace model and explains why retailers signed on.

The Amazon problem

Amazon was conspicuously absent from the launch partners list. That isn't surprising — Amazon's flywheel depends on shoppers starting their journey at Amazon.com, and Universal Cart's pitch is explicitly to start somewhere else.

But Amazon's absence also creates Universal Cart's biggest gap. Roughly half of US online shopping starts on Amazon. A cart that follows you across the internet but cannot touch Amazon's catalog leaves a hole that competitors will try to exploit. Perplexity already lets you check out from Amazon inside its chat interface. OpenAI's ChatGPT shopping integration, which expanded last month, includes Amazon partnerships.

TechTimes called this "the race Google hasn't won yet" — a reference to Google's repeated past attempts to displace Amazon in product search going back to 2012's Google Shopping relaunch.

Industry impact

For Shopify, this is arguably the biggest distribution unlock in years. Tobias Lütke, Shopify's CEO, has been publicly aligned with the agentic commerce thesis for over twelve months. Universal Cart turns that thesis into transactions.

For Walmart, the partnership extends a string of AI commerce moves including the company's own Sparky agent and its OpenAI integration. Walmart is increasingly positioning itself as the brick-and-mortar default in any agentic commerce flow.

For independent merchants on Shopify, the impact depends on how Universal Cart's recommendations are ranked. Google has not disclosed the ranking algorithm yet — historically a source of friction with both retailers and regulators.

Expert reactions

Analysts called the launch a credible Amazon challenger. "This is the first time Google has built shopping software that doesn't feel like a 2014 grafted-on product," wrote one analyst on X. "Universal Cart understands that you don't start at a retailer anymore — you start anywhere."

Skeptics raised the obvious concerns. Will users actually trust Gemini to make compatibility decisions for a $2,000 PC build? Will Universal Cart honor retailer-specific promotions, loyalty points, and bundles? Both questions remain open.

How to access it

Universal Cart is rolling out first in Search and Gemini in the United States this summer. YouTube and Gmail support will follow later in 2026. Google has not announced an international launch date.

Users will not need to download anything new. The cart will appear inside the existing Gemini app and as a persistent shopping panel inside Search. The blog post confirmed that Universal Cart respects existing privacy settings and does not require a separate sign-up.

Bottom line

If Universal Cart works as advertised, this is the most significant change to Google Shopping since the product launched. The compatibility checking demo points to something bigger than a smarter price tracker — it's a hint at AI that understands the relationships between products, not just the products themselves. The unanswered question is whether shoppers will move away from one-tab Amazon checkout for a smarter but more complicated experience. Google has tried, and failed, to win this race before. This time it has Gemini behind it, and that may finally be enough.
